Heartworms
Now that summer and mosquitoes are with us, it is no longer an option to not treat your hounds (and any other canines you may have) with heart worm preventative.

This deadly parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes (which of course, are extremely prevalent right now), and without you knowing it, your dog may contract heart worms.
The costs of treating the heart worms greatly outweigh the cost of prevention. And treatment usually involves use of arsenic based drugs which require many weeks of immobility for your dog.
Treating your hound during the warm months is the bare minimum. Many heart worm preventatives also prevent intestinal parasites, so should be given year around. And once again, treating hook or round worms is much more expensive than preventing them.
