Help With Fleas
The summer of 2011 is will be remembered for something other than heat and humidity. Fleas are rearing their ugly heads in alarming numbers across the backs (and other parts) of our hounds like nothing in recent memory. The cool spring weather may be partially to blame for the explosion of parasites we are experiencing this summer. There is also an ongoing discussion that infers that "Frontline", the most popular topical flea treatment used on dogs in this country may be losing its power to control fleas.
A quick search of internet sources ends up leaving us scratching our heads (but hopefully not because we have fleas). Some sites lead you to believe that fleas have become immune to "Frontline", others will tell you that only certain fleas are immune, while others will tell you it is working as well as ever.
I'm not sure what the answer is. I have noticed fleas on my hounds for the first time in years, and I have used "Frontline" for years. Several sources I read advise using "Advantage" or "Advantix" if ticks are also present in your area.
If any of you have the answers or suggestions, please drop us a line and let us know what you know or what you are doing. I've also included several resources that I have looked at, to help you make your flea control decisions. Good luck fighting fleas this summer and thanks for any input.
