To Rescue Hounds, WE Need Homes!
Over the past seven months, we have found homes for over 70 hounds. Unfortunately, due to many returns as a result of poor economic conditions, this number does not reflect an equal amount of dogs rescued from tracks and breeding facilities. With a very slow spring for adoptions, hounds have been moving very slowly through our current foster homes, many taking in excess of 6 months to find their home. This did not allow for many additional hounds to move into our rescue.
Through June, we have only been able to bring in an additional 40 hounds. This is way below pace for the goals we set for ourselves for 2011. That also means many hounds sat at the track that could have otherwise been taken in by American Greyhound.
If you have ever thought about fostering a hound, NOW is the time! Second Chance at Life, our prison fostering partners, have a class graduating on August 4th (these hounds are currently in prison in Florida and will be shipped to us shortly afterward). Also, we have been in contact with numerous trainers at tracks who have huge surpluses of retiring hounds that need a place to go, and they need that place soon!
If this has gotten your interest, let me tell you a little bit about how it works. American Greyhound provides all necessary vet work and medications, and will provide a kennel for your foster. All you need to do is provide some food in their belly, a roof over their head and a little love. When we have someone interested in your foster hound, we ask that you make them available for the interested party to see (either bring them out to an adoption event or allow for another member to pick them up and get them out).
To get the process started, go to our web site and fill out a fostering application (they are available from our adoptable dogs page) and submit it. If you have any questions, give Gabi, our Foster Coordinator.
